After blatantly ignoring 80% of submissions, the Ngauranga to Airport draft plan has been published. This proposes (amongst other things) grade separation of North/South and East/West traffic at the Basin Reserve. Let me quickly say, there is nothing wrong with this – my submission, and I’m sure many others, suggested a tunnel under the basin from Kent/Cambridge Terrace to Adelaide Road, for public transport only. What we are getting is a $33 million dollar flyover that will encourage more cars into the CBD, Mt Victoria and the Eastern suburbs, as well as destroying the iconic Basin.
On 25 Nov, the ‘Save the Basin’ Trust is organising a public meeting and campaign launch to stop the Basin Reserve Flyover.
- When: Tuesday 25th November 7:00pm
- Where: St Joseph’s Church, 150-152 Brougham Street, Mt Victoria
- Contact: Kent Duston (kent@mtvictoria.org.nz) or
- Councillor Iona Pannett ionapannett@xtra.co.nz or 384-3382/021-227-8509
Edit 20 Nov
Maximus over at Eye of the Fish has posted some interesting commentary on this proposal
On a slightly related note1, Tom at the Wellingtonista has done some great analysis on polling booths in the Wellington area. (Full google maps mashup)
1if you make the somewhat large assumption that left leaning people are going to be more against this than right leaning people
